What do the numbers actually mean?
Door weight
We use weight-per-square-foot averages for each material category (steel uninsulated ≈ 1.6 psf, insulated steel ≈ 2.3 psf, wood ≈ 3.5 psf, aluminum-glass ≈ 2.5 psf). Multiply by the door's square footage and you get a conservative mid-range estimate. A professional installer weighs the door directly with a scale before specifying springs.
Spring cycle life
Industry-standard torsion springs are rated at 10,000 cycles. That's roughly 7 years at 4 cycles per day, 5 years at 6 cycles, and 3.5 years at 8 cycles. High-cycle springs (20,000 / 30,000) cost $40–80 more per spring but double or triple the lifespan, almost always worth it on the second replacement.
Replacement urgency
The urgency score compares your current spring age (if provided) to expected life at your use rate. "Monitor" means you're under 70% of expected life. "Plan ahead" means 70–90%. "Schedule now" means you're past 90% and one failure away from a trapped car. Any door with visible coil gap, unusual noise, or heavy feel should be inspected regardless of calculator result.

Common questions about door weight and spring life
How much does a typical residential garage door weigh?
Single-car steel doors (8–10 ft wide × 7 ft tall) weigh 100–180 lb depending on insulation. Double-car doors (16 ft wide × 7 ft tall) run 180–320 lb. Wood carriage-style doors can exceed 350 lb. Full-view aluminum glass doors are lighter per square foot but still 180–260 lb because of the glass. The calculator above uses conservative mid-range values for each material category.
What does "10,000 cycle" mean on a torsion spring?
A cycle is one open + one close. A 10,000-cycle spring is rated for that many full cycles before failure. At 4 cycles per day (typical family with one driver), that's about 7 years. Heavy-use households (multiple drivers, teenagers, home-based work) can hit 8–10 cycles/day and burn through a 10,000-cycle spring in 3–4 years. Upgrades to 20,000 or 30,000 cycles roughly double or triple that lifespan, worth the $40–80 upcharge.
Can I buy and install torsion springs myself?
You can legally buy them online for $30–80 per spring. You should not install them yourself. A loaded torsion spring holds 150–200 lb of tension and has killed and maimed DIYers every year. Winding bars slip, cones fail, and the release is directional. Licensed installation runs $240–520 for a single spring replacement, cheaper than an ER visit. How do I tell if my spring is close to failing?
Four signs: (1) door feels heavier to lift by hand when disconnected from the opener, (2) opener strains, slows, or hesitates mid-travel, (3) visible gap in the spring coil, a broken spring often separates by 2–3 inches, (4) the door drops fast or unevenly when released. If you see any of these in a spring older than 5 years, get it inspected before it snaps.
My door has two springs. Do both need replacing at the same time?
Almost always yes. Both springs are the same age and have taken the same cycle count. When one breaks, the other is weeks or months from breaking. Matched-pair replacement is $380–720 installed.
